Thrips Control

  • Monitor thrips populations with blue sticky cards and lures.
  • For Western flower thrips and onion thrips, make one preventive application of 125 Hypoaspis soil predator mites per plant at pupating site, soil or ground, early in season. Also controls fungus gnats!Apply at least 10 Cucumeris predators per plant immediately upon discovering western flower or onion thrips. They prey on immature stages and take 2-3 weeks to reduce adult levels. Release Orius as necessary to control outbreaks. Consume all types of thrips and other soft-bodied insects. Use only when thrips are present and when day length exceeds 16 hours. In crops with a low tolerance for thrips damage—cucumbers and peppers—one round of slow-release hangable sachets of Cucumeris protects flowers and fruit for six to eight weeks.
  • In wetter media (rock wool), Steinernema feltiae nematodes attack pupating thrips better than Hypoaspis.
